Our STEM Era - Powered by Girls - Oct 19

We are proud to announce Our STEM Era – Powered by Girls. It will be held on Saturday October 19, 2024, at noon – 4pm at Naperville North High School, Learning Commons.  This event is put together by Naperville North HS GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math and Science), Neuqua Valley HS GIS (Girls in STEM) and Vision 1948.  All are welcome, especially students gr. 5-12 and their families. 

We will feature real world STEM applications by businesses and universities, small group discussions with industry professionals and college faculty. There will be door prizes including an iPad and a drone, and giveaways including friendship bracelets! We have lined up 16 fantastic exhibitors including Argonne National Laboratory, Ecolab, Endeavor Health, Fermi National Accelerator Lab, UIUC School of Engineering and more! Pre-registration is encouraged – those who do get an extra ticket for the prize draw!

AAUW National STEM Ed for Girls - Tech Exploration : Feb 7, 6pm CST

STEMEd for Girls is a FREE exciting online program created for high school girls and their parents/guardians.  This session will focus on Technology, provided by Vision 1948, featuring 3 panelists – a university junior majoring in Computer Science/Data Science with an internship in Netflix, a recent Entertainment Engineering graduate working at Walt Disney Imagineering, and a technologist and Nokia Bell Labs fellow.  There will also be a hands-on session on Artificial Intelligence – the technology that is transforming our society in many ways.

A panel hosted by Illinois 41st District Representative Janet Yang Rohr with Vision 1948 leaders and partners.  Hear an open discussion on Vision 1948’s mission to bring gender equity back to Tech, its education offerings and other initiatives, its partnership with local schools and AAUW Naperville.  You can watch the recording here

Hollywood Meets Tech to Change the Face (June 23 2023)

A panel hosted by film producers & Nokia Bell Labs to discuss how Hollywood can bring women back to the tech field to create gender parity.  Target audience: Entertainment industry personnel. 

Wegner Elementary School (West Chicago) High Interest Day (June 2 2023)

Vision 1948, in collaboration with Nokia’s HISPA and StrongHer Chicagoland, was invited back for a 2nd year to provide a Tech program for Wegner Elementary’s High Interest Day. We presented a mixed media hands-on session on  A.I. : introductory videos and a game, AI for Oceans, from Code.org that gave the kids hands on experience to understand how to train A.I., the importance of using sufficient, valid and unbiased data to train A.I. Plus a Google AIY box that had been trained to recognize smiles. Thanks to Anne Lee, Esmerelda Flores, and Rose Martin for bringing the program to Wegner.  And Shina Liu for sharing her Google AIY box.

A Night Out with Girls in STEM and Envisioning Tech in Your Future panel (April 20 2023)

Exciting activity for area Jr High and HS girls and parents! Hear about tech career options and advice from young and seasoned professionals. Hands-on A.I. and other STEM demos.  This is an in-person event in partnership with Neuqua Valley HS. in Naperville, IL.

What is Artificial Intelligence? How does it work?  Learn about these fundamentals and engage in conversations about ethical and responsible A.I. This is a Zoom event. 

Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (Sept 2022) at AAUW Illinois Leadership Conference

Interactive Artificial Intelligence game to introduce machine learning to non-technical group, and the importance of quality data and equitable representation to prevent bias decision making by “smart” machines. This is a Zoom event.
